The NDIS, or National Disability Insurance Scheme, is the Government’s way of providing a range of support to Australian citizens and residents under the age of 65 who have a present and emerging disability. If you are eligible, you will receive an individualised plan funded through the NDIA (National Disability Insurance Agency). How does the NDIS support my Mental Health?Psychosocial disability is a term used to describe a disability that may arise from a mental health challenge. Not everyone who has a mental health condition will have a psychosocial disability, but for people who do, it can be severe, longstanding and have an impact on their recovery. People with a disability as a result of their mental health condition may qualify for the NDIS.If you are eligible, the NDIS will fund the services and supports you require to live the life you want and deserve.
What is Mental Health?Mental health refers to a balanced state of mind, whilst mental ill-health indicates that something is off-balance, off-centre and is impacting someone’s ability to live a normal life. Myths about Anxiety There is no cure for Anxiety? Yes, there is.The section below has information about treatment options.Anxiety is genetic. Incorrect.Although it is true that some people have a genetic disposition, a lot of anxiety is caused by negative thinking patterns and ‘learned’ behaviour, which can be changed. Evidence suggests that at least 40% of our happiness comes from our own internal processes, 10% from our environment and up to 50% from our genetics. Science also states that with epigenetics at play, we can also turn on or turn off certain genes within us through experiences and thought processes. Our genes are NOT set in stone but can be turned on or off at will. Therefore, how we choose to either, consciously or subconsciously perceive the world and situations that arise, dictates how happy we truly are. https://developingchild.harvard.edu/resources/what-is-epigenetics-and-how-does-it-relate-to-child-development/

Do I need to attend my young person’s therapy session? If you give written permission then we can see your young person without you being present in the room with them. In this situation, a follow up email between parent and therapist is available whilst therapy is being provided. Please also feel free to sit in during the therapy session if your young person feels more comfortable with this. But please also be aware that your presence may be a contraindicator to their therapy.
Do you do joint therapy between parents and individuals? Yes, we do. However, we also like to see parents and individuals for individual sessions first. Our primary goal is to educate and inform the whole family on problems that are evident and then teach you HOW to work around these problems. There is no set way to do this, each individual circumstance is assessed at the time and adjusted as required.
How can this service help me or my young person? Families including parents or caregivers are often our first and greatest role model, however, young people are often exposed to a range of behavioural patterns from parents, family members or caregivers that can often directly, or indirectly impact the young person. As a child, evidence shows we often either model and mirror parent behaviours or defy them. Additionally, parents or caregivers can innocently enable their young person’s behaviour. In this situation, too often, parents can become stuck and unsure of what to do. Either way, learned behaviours, good, bad, or otherwise, has a direct and powerful impact on current behaviours. It is easy for young people to be overwhelmed by their emotions if they have no one to talk to, if they feel mis-understood or if they have no one around them that they trust. The majority of mental health challenges will emerge before the age of 25. The earlier that young people at risk receive support in developing and building essential life skills, the more likely they are to cope with challenging situations and emotions into adulthood. The ‘right’ support will provide them with the tools and techniques to develop resilience and mental and emotional strength, and will steer them away from negative habits and behaviours. Through Strategic Psychotherapy we can guide you through the what and why, and show you HOW to move forward. Our goal is to teach you about the patterns you may be running that are problematic, show you HOW to be aware of them, and give you strategies to support positive change. The best thing about Strategic Psychotherapy and Clinical Hypnotherapy is that it is not like other talk therapies. We do not need to hear your whole story, we only need to hear what problem you have, what you want to change. Our goal is to help you identify the underlying issues and support you to learn another way, a better way. We will also work with you to set appropriate positive boundaries and teach you HOW to defend them. This is a win/win for all involved. Evidence tells us that the fast-paced everchanging world we live in today has a major impact on people, such as stress and being overwhelmed. Our goal is to empower you to be the best version of yourself in this fast-paced, everchanging world we live in.
What happens during a session? The initial session involves an interview. We want to know about the problem. Where it is evident. HOW you DO the problem. When it is not a problem, and what strategies you currently use. We want to know what you are good at and what you love to do. You do not have to tell us your story, but you can if you wish. From there, our role is to educate you on the patterns you are currently running and teach you HOW to interrupt them. We will also teach you the gaps in your experiences that will help you change the patterns that are causing you the problem (this is known as psycho-education). We will explain Clinical Hypnotherapy to you and debunk any myths around this therapeutic tool. Throughout each session you will have the opportunity to ask any questions or discuss any concerns you may have.
My young person is not interested but I know it will help them. Can I make them do the sessions? You can make them do the sessions if they are open and willing to change. Our recommendation in this situation would be for you to complete 6 sessions first. You are your young person’s greatest role model. In many cases the change in yourself, the boundaries you will learn, and the new patterns you will run will have a lasting and profound impact on your young person. You may quickly realise that you can now equip them to be the best versions of themselves without them engaging in a session personally. What if Strategic Psychotherapy or Clinical Hypnotherapy is not for me? The first 30 minutes of your initial session are free. If you feel this is not for you then we are happy to end the session at 30 minutes at no cost whatsoever to you. If you are unsure of purchasing the 6 sessions then one-off sessions are a good option for you. We are also happy to convert the one-off session to the 6 sessions package deal after your first session should you choose to change to a cheaper rate.
